“Wild Man”. German Style TF at North House Folk School 2023

After a multi year pandemic and children hiatus I returned to North House Folk School in the summer of 2023 to teach the 6th installment of the German Style timber framing course.

Every iteration sees this little 10’x16′ Fachwerk frame get a little change. Making it more user friendly and usually adding a little more work.

The “Wild Man” – Der “wilde Mann”. A bracing configuration from traditional German Fachwerk.

The “Wild Mann” was an exercise I did as an apprentice. It is a triple lap joint mirrored on a post. As to why it is called a wild man there are several explanations. The instructing master at the time said that this assembly has driven quite a few timber framers in to a state of wild fury. A more visual explanation is that you can see a “W” above, and an “M” below the horizontal member.
