Log structures in Two Harbors
At first glance this picture does not inspire logs.
And in this picture from the 1930’s the barn looks like it has vertical siding.
But a look inside reveals something I had not seen before.
Those walls are not board and batten, but vertical logs!
A look from the rear part of the barn show up the stark difference in building type.
The gambrel roof above is stick framed but original…
…and continued in the addition that dates to a few years before 1962.
Other interesting buildings with this type of walls on this early 20th century homestead include:
A little two room sauna and former dwelling.
A similarly sized building with more recent lean-to’s,
which has also been used as a dwelling. Remember that black and white picture?
And sadly a neglected garage building that used to have a hip roof framed out of 2by4’s.
Though its state of collapse does reveal details of its construction at the top of the wall,
And the chinking.
