Timberframing

timberframing

The art of timber framing is old. It has many traditions and its basic technology has not changed much. From cathedrals to barns, there are countless examples of structures in cultures around the globe that can speak to the longevity of a timber frame. The low tech character of a mortise and tenon joint is at the same time structurally convincing and beautiful.

Much of this supporting structure of a building and the necessary joinery and craft is visible in a timber frame. One can see the handwriting of the designer and craftsman throughout. With attitudes about consumption changing it is natural to turn to an older, more crafted, less processed way of building.
